I Swallowed a Mouse

by A Flower in Disguise

/

about

Inspired by the macabre method of torture & accidents where people ingested a rodent (normally a mouse or rat) that would scratch, bite and burrow through their organs eventually killing them. My "mouse" and I cohabitate in this metaphorical song.

lyrics

Nobody wants
Nobody wants more than to think of anything else
Nobody really cared
Nobody really wanted me there
To think is to shrink
Nobody would miss me but me

Fine is benign
Light on my feet
Behavior told it all
All I wouldn’t say
But all I knew well
I swallowed a mouse
And it’s scratching, scratching to get out
But it’s part of me now

A year’s time, there’s a nest in me
And it’s not a secret but I contain it
Safe, I just want the quiet
I intend to keep it safe within me

I know the cold in my own blood
Paralleled to the blackest birds
Excluded or intruding
Nobodies scarier
So many scars in my mind
Stolen all this time
Running up the walls
Chewing on sparks
Another watery eye daring myself to cry
Like always, like always

Nobody wants
Nobody wants more than to think of anything else
Nobody really cared
Nobody really wanted me there
To think is to shrink
Nobody would miss me but me

I swallowed a mouse
And it’s scratching, scratching to get out
But it’s part of me now
It can’t escape me or being found
We’ve grown numb to each other
My blood dries to it
We are whole as a forest
I am a haunted house
